What to Bring to a Kimono Rental? The Short Answer: Come Empty-Handed

店内の巾着・和装小物

The question we get most from first-timers is “what should I bring?” The answer is simple: come empty-handed.

It is all in the plan

Kimono, juban underrobe, underwear, obi (sash), tabi socks, zori sandals, bag: everything you need in order to get dressed is included in the plan. We store your own clothes and luggage for free, so you can turn up with a suitcase and it is no problem. Plenty of people stop by before checking into their hotel.

Three things worth bringing

If we had to name some: 1) a few hairpins (for adjusting your fringe), 2) a small phone strap (one that will not catch on your sleeve), 3) a spare pair of socks (for your shoes after you return the kimono). That is about it. No change of clothes, no big preparation. Start by picking a plan on the pricing plans page.

Three things to do the day before that make the day easier

1) Save one or two photos of the look you want on your phone (it makes the kimono and hair conversation three times faster). 2) Have a rough idea of your plans for the day (if we know your walking route we can suggest the right formality of kimono). 3) Tidy your nails (your hands show at the sleeve and turn up in a lot of photos). Each of these takes five minutes.

The list of things you do not need to bring

People bring these more often than you would think, and none of them are needed: hair styling tools (we have them all), underwear and tabi socks (included in the plan), a large mirror (the shop is full of them), a bag for your change of clothes (we store them for you). The lighter you arrive, the more comfortable your day is.

Suitcases, prams and pets

We store suitcases free of charge. Many people fit us in before hotel check-in or after check-out. Prams can be stored too. We ask that pets not come inside the shop, but you are free to take them along on your walk (lead required).

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can you look after my suitcase?
We store it free of charge. You are welcome to use us before hotel check-in or after check-out.
Q. Can I use my own hair ornament?
Of course. Hair ornaments are included in the plan too, so compare them and use whichever you prefer.
Q. Contacts or glasses?
Either is fine. If photos matter to you, glasses can catch reflections, so most people take them off for the shots.
Q. What do I do with my valuables?
Keep valuables with you in the drawstring pouch or bag that comes with your plan. We only store the larger luggage.
Q. Is there anything I should wear on the way in?
A top that buttons or zips at the front is best. It is easier to take off and put back on after your hair is done.
