Kimono Rental for Men: Haori Style or Formal Hakama?

A man in a black haori holding a Japanese umbrella — men's kimono rental

Kimono rental for men is actually simple. There are two options: haori (jacket) kimono, or formal hakama.

Haori kimono for walking around

This is the style men have worn as everyday dress. It moves well and suits a walk around Asakusa or a date. The HANAYAKA men’s haori kimono plan is ¥7,700 (tax included), covering the drawstring pouch, setta sandals and hair.

Formal hakama for special occasions

For meeting the family before a wedding, a coming-of-age keepsake or a formal shoot, hakama is the only choice. The men’s formal hakama plan is ¥15,500 (tax included). The upright line of it is a different thing from haori, and it holds its own next to a woman in furisode (long-sleeved formal kimono). If you are coming as a couple, the couple plans on the pricing plans page and the deluxe couple shoot (¥65,000) are worth a look.

Men’s kimono: sizing and how it actually feels

We carry a wide range built around heights of 165 to 185cm. It feels about as heavy as a yukata, maybe slightly more, and hardly restricts movement. The common worry is where the obi (sash) sits. A men’s obi is tied low on the hipbone, so you can eat a full meal without discomfort, which is one of the quiet advantages of men’s kimono.

Matching formality with your partner: a quick guide

If you are walking as a pair, matching the level of formality tightens up the photos. She is in komon or a lace kimono then haori kimono (¥7,700). She is in furisode then formal hakama (¥15,500). Wedding photos then montsuki hakama (included in the wedding plan). Just avoid being dressed more casually than she is and you will be fine.

Men in groups, or on their own

Men coming in on their own or with friends is not unusual. A group of friends in haori kimono walking around Asakusa, someone giving a colleague visiting from overseas the experience, one man getting photos taken: we get these every month. The two-man formal photo plan (¥50,000, two hakama outfits plus an hour with a professional photographer) gets used for brothers’ keepsakes and coming-of-age celebrations.
